The weather was hot, but the competition on Sequim High Schools tennis courts might have been even hotter.
A total of 44 two-person teams played in nine events at the annual Sequim Doubles Tournament last weekend, with either all-Sequim or Sequim-Port Angeles pairs taking eight of those titles.
Sequim couple Allison and Doug Hastings defended their Mixed 4.0 title with a 6-0, 7-5 win against former SHS stars Kyle McKenzie and Justine Textor, then won titles in their respective gender classifications: Allison paired with Beverly Hoffman to top Cheryl Hainje (Lacey) and Brenda Lash (Olympia) in the womens 4.0 finals, while Doug teamed with David Godfrey of Port Angeles to survive two, three-set matches, including a tiebreaking thriller against Jon Irvine (Redmond) and Jorge Irvine (Portland, Ore.) in the mens 4.0 division round robin.
Other winners include Sequims David Gibbs and Jim Irvine, Mens 60 division; Carl Strunk (Port Angeles) and Andrew Gunstone (Sequim), Mens 3.0 division; Sequims Darryl Fling and Stu Sherman, Mens 3.5 division; Sequims Jeff Brown and Beverly Hoffman, mixed 3.5 division; Sequims Terry Candrian and Brenda Landstrom, Womens 3.5 division; and Bainbridge Island duo Mary Ann Campbell and Debra Harper the tourneys only out-of-town champs who took the Womens 3.0 division.
Laurel Cripe of Peninsula Tennis Club said the event grew 40 percent over matches played in 2007.
