Barry takes soccer title

Sequim's Alexander Barry, 11, won the Washington State Recreation and Parks Soccer Challenge State Championship, boys 11-12 age group, in Lacey Oct. 12.

Barry competed against top regional competitors from across the state; he qualified after finishing in the top two at a similar challenge in Port Angeles earlier this year.

Barry and others were judged in four events: a throw-in scored on distance and accuracy; a kick scored on distance and accuracy; a speed dribble around 10 cones; and two goal shots, with 50 points per corner shot. Barry scored 50 on each shot.

Barry, 11, is a sixth-grader at Sequim Middle School whose family recently moved from Utah.



Adult volleyball league

opens registration

Area volleyball players are encouraged to get teams together for the Peninsula Volleyball League, which begins a new season Oct. 19.

The league is for men and women with intermediate to advanced volleyball skills. Matches are Sunday nights from November through February.

Players interested in participating are encouraged to attend one or both of the open gyms, set for 6 p.m. Oct. 19 and Oct. 26 at the Peninsula College gym, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Entry fee is $200 per team; proceeds go toward athletic scholarships.

Anglers meeting features

'university' producer

Puget Sound Anglers - North Olympic Peninsula Chapter, hosts Terry Wiest, producer of steelheaduniversity.com, at its next regular meeting, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim.

Wiest is scheduled to give a presentation about techniques used in fishing for steelhead and salmon in Olympic Peninsula rivers. For more information, call 582-0836.



Sequim batting cages adopts new fall hours

The Sequim Baseball U-18 batting and pitching facility has new hours until the fall prep seasons are complete. New hours are 3-6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday. The organization is accepting new memberships.

Knights host youth

soccer challenge

The Knights of Columbus hosts a soccer challenge for boys and girls ages 10-14 at 1 p.m. Oct. 19 at Sequim Middle School, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

Winners of age divisions may advance to the district competition. Participants are required to provide proof of age (copy of a birth certificate or an official ID card) and signed parent consent form at registration.

Helpers - such as parents, siblings or other volunteers - are needed at the event as well.

Royall to play for

Olympic Rangers

Max Royall, a second team All-Olympic League player in his senior season this spring, is one of 35 new recruits for the Olympic College Rangers.

Royall led Sequim in multiple offensive categories this spring as an outfielder, including batting average (.431), hits (28), doubles (six) and RBIs (23). He was nearly as solid on the mound, leading Sequim in innings pitched (32) and tied in strikeouts (32). He held opponents to a .246 average while racking up a 3.28 ERA.
