Let sleeping dogs lie.

After a slow first half that saw Peninsula and Bellevue combine for just 30 points, the host Bulldogs exploded for 43 second-half points in a 58-41 victory Saturday night.

In her second game with the team, Peninsula sophomore Brooke Helpenstell scored a team-high 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but it was in vain; Bellevue used a balanced attack to drop Peninsula, getting at least six points from six different players and seeing their bench contribute 26 points.

Peninsula sophomore Sam Flett hit for 11 points and four assists, but the Bulldogs held Peninsula to just 19-of-54 from the field (35 percent), 1-of-11 from three-point range and only five free-throw attempts.

The Pirates also committed 22 turnovers to Bellevue's 15.

Amy Rochowiak led the Bulldogs with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The loss drops Peninsula to 1-1 in conference and 6-7 overall.

The Pirates take on Olympic College in Port Angeles Jan. 14 and travel to Skagit Valley (Mount Vernon) on Jan. 17.
