'Riders top Wolves in rivalry meet

The proverbial scoreboard declared a Sequim loss, but the Wolves - one of them, anyway - just extended the season.
Sophomore Noe Calderon raced to a 1:09.8 finish in the 100 breaststroke, a state 2A meet-qualifying mark by just .04 second, as the Wolves fell to league rival Port Angeles 115-70 on Jan. 21.
Calderon's was just one of several bright spots for the Wolves, who took first in three events and set 11 personal-best marks.
Sequim's 200 free relay squad of Calderon, Chris Merrikin, Thomas Moores and Doug Dunbar, took first place with a 1:49.3 finish.
Parker Steichen won the 200 individual medley with a 2:35.9 finish, while teammate Tanner Estep improved his 200 IM time by two seconds and is less than three seconds from a district meet-qualifying mark. Estep also shed 11 seconds off his previous best in the 500 free.
Jared Lindorfer is headed to district after posting a 1:17.2 mark in the 100 backstroke.
"He has worked so hard for this achievement," Sequim coach Linda Moats said.
Calderon cut 14 seconds from his previous best 200 free time at 2:08.4, the best mark by a Wolf in the event this year.
Sequim's Kris Petersen cut more than a second off his 50 free time while Dunbar cut five seconds off his best in the 100 free.
David Vollenweider completed his first 100 fly in competition with the Wolves.
Tyler Burke (50 free, 100 free) and Ben Flowers (100 fly, 100 back) each picked up two wins for the victorious Roughriders.
Sequim was slated to host Bremerton on Jan. 26 - results were unavailable at press time.
The Wolves (4-5) host Olympic on Jan. 28 in their final regular season meet of the 2009-2010 season. Sequim competes at the Olympic League meet in Port Angeles on Feb. 4, the West Central District meet in Renton on Feb. 12 and at the class 2A state meet in Federal Way on Feb. 19.
