The Mariners, Yankees and the rest of Major League baseball aren’t the only ones filling up the diamonds this summer.

Sequim Little League’s all-star squads hit the field this week as they aim to advance to state, regional and national tourneys.

For the first time, Sequim is hosting the district’s softball tournament at James Standard Park, 136 Silberhorn Road, through July 11. Thanks to volunteer efforts from board members and parents, the league was able to host the tourney after building a second softball field.

Here are notes about each team. (A picture of the boys’ 10- and 11-year-old baseball all stars was not available at press time.)

10-11 girls
Sequim’s 10-11 girls were slated to play at 6 p.m. July 6 against either Bainbridge Island or Gig Harbor National. A win puts Sequim in the championship game July 10 with two chances for the district title.

11-12 girls

Sequim’s 11-12 girls squad was scheduled to play at 5 p.m. on July 5 against either Bainbridge Island, who beat North Kitsap American 12-2. A win pits Sequim against either Gig Harbor or East Jefferson on July in the semifinals; a loss drops Sequim into the consolation bracket against North Kitsap National.

Junior girls

Sequim opens the three-team juniors tournament against a combined Bainbridge Island/North Kitsap squad at 6 p.m. on July 8. The winner takes on Key Peninsula on July 9 while the losing team drops to the consolation bracket for a July 10 game.

10-11 boys

Playing in Belfair,
Sequim’s youngest boys squad got a jump-start on the rest of the local teams, dropping a 8-2 decision to Gig Harbor National on July 1. Sequim then battled Key Peninsula to an 8-8 tie; the game was scheduled to finish July 5. Winner of that contest takes on South Kitsap West.

11-12 boys

The older Sequim baseball squad opens the district tournament in Gig Harbor at noon on July 11, taking on the winner of a Bainbridge Island/East-South Jefferson game. The winner advances to the district quarterfinals of the 13-team tourney.
