Wolves nab sixth seed to districts

These Wolves are in for a dogfight.

Sequim split a pair of sub-district match-ups last weekend to take the No. 6 seed into the West Central District tournament, set for Nov. 5-6 at Washington and Franklin Pierce high schools.

Sequim is one of 12 teams vying for one of six berths to the class 2A state tourney.

The Wolves open with a 5 p.m. game on Nov. 5 against No. 11-seeded Sumner. The winner of that game faces No. 3-seeded White River while the loser drops into the loser-out consolation bracket.

The Wolves opened the sub-district tourney with a three-set sweep of Washington (25-19, 25-18, 25-18), but then fell to archrival Port Angeles in three sets (25-15, 19-25, 25-18, 25-23).

Sequim is seeking a return to the class 2A state tournament after falling short at last year's district tourney.

Top district seeds include (in order) Fife, North Kitsap, White River and Interlake.

The Wolves wrapped up the Olympic League No. 2 seed after a 3-0 win at Klahowya (25-16, 25-12, 25-19) on Oct. 26.

Haleigh Harrison (10 kills), Kyla Martin (eight) and Jessica Lauritzen (seven) led the offense while Taylor Balkan added 16 assists and was 16-of-18 on serves.

"Haleigh, Jessica and Kyla were pretty much unstoppable at the net, especially with Taylor setting them so well," Sequim coach Jennie Webber Heilman said.

Katelynne McDaniels added a serving run of 11 points in a row, including five aces.

North Kitsap took home the league title with a four-set win against Port Angeles that night.
