Olympic National Park is working on an environmental assessment to fully describe and analyze six preliminary alternatives for two proposed segments of the Olympic Discovery Trail within park boundaries near Lake Crescent and the Sol Duc entrance road.

Clallam County has provided topographic survey data, a comprehensive assessment of two railroad tunnels and preliminary design drawings for use by park staff.

“We are grateful for the work that Clallam County has completed and shared with us,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Karen Gustin. “Olympic National Park is committed to seeing this project through in a timely and efficient manner and we expect the environmental assessment to be completed next fall.”

The environmental assessment is scheduled for public review and comment in summer 2011; completion of the planning process is anticipated by fall 2011.

As called for in the 2008 Olympic National Park General Management Plan and the 1998 Lake Crescent Management Plan, the park has proposed developing the historical Spruce Railroad grade into a nonmotorized, multi-use trail from the Lyre River to the park’s western boundary. The General Management Plan also calls for development of a universally accessible trail in the Lake Crescent area.
