The battle for the top four spots in the Olympic League — and, more importantly, one of the league’s four team berths to districts — is set.

Sequim High hosts the league championship at The Cedars at Dungeness golf course on Oct. 20, with the top four class 2A schools and top 20 individuals heading on to the West Central District meet a week later in Tacoma.

Sequim runners got a good warm-up for that meet with a battle in Port Angeles last week.

Adrian Clifford led a strong contingent of Wolves boys as they finished nine points back of the host Roughriders. Port Angeles’ Nick Schindler led the boys’ race with a 12:56 mark, with Clifford finishing eight back. A pack of Wolves finished in places 6-9, including Dylan Chatters, Mikey Cobb, Peter Ohnstad and Joel Christopher.

Port Angeles finished with 23 team points (lower score wins), with Sequim second (32) and North Mason a distant third (74).

On the girls’ side, Roughrider sophomore Elizabeth Stevenson took first (16:06) with Sequim junior Jasmine McMullin the runner-up, 56 seconds back, to help Sequim finish second. Port Angeles tallied 23 team points, pacing Sequim (44) and North Mason (71).

Sequim’s Brittany Vereide was ninth (18:26) and Amelia Ohnstad was 10th (18:27). Seven Sequim runners placed between ninth and 18th.

The Westside Classic district meet is slated for Oct. 30 at American Lake Golf Course near Tacoma.

The class 2A state meet is set for Nov. 5 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
