New highs and lows.

While Sequim High coaches and athletes were considering a season without Haleigh Harrison, one of their top athletes and a school high-jump record holder, another track star leaped his way into the record books.

Jayson Brocklesby, fresh off a win in the 400-meter sprint, cleared 6 feet, 4 inches in the high jump to snap the record Shane Royal set in 1996 (6-3.5).

“And he had a couple of good cracks at 6-6,” Sequim coach Brad Moore said. “(Jayson) can be faster on his curve and … and be more vertical on takeoff. There’s definitely more in him.”

The feat marked a mixed set of results for the Wolves.

On the boys’ side, Brocklesby and Emanuel Herrera led a Wolves attack that posted top-two finishes in 10 events, but with 51 team points finished several strides behind meet leader Olympic (85 points). Port Angeles was third with 44 points.

Still, Sequim boys set or tied 26 personal bests at last week’s meet.

Herrera took top honors in the 300 hurdles and was second in the 110 hurdles by 0.01 second. He also finished second in the 200. Brocklesby was runner-up in the triple jump after a 39-foot, 11-inch effort.

The two joined Christian Miles and Lopaka Yasumura to win the 4x100 relay in 44.27 seconds, six-hundredths of a second better than the Sequim relay team that placed seventh at the state 2A meet last season.

“They’re faster than at this point last year — very encouraging,” Moore said.

Mack Grinnell showed few effects of an early injury by clearing 12 feet in the pole vault for a first-place finish, backed by Hamish Peers in second place (11 feet).

“(Mack) almost cleared 12-6; there are several things he can do technically (to improve),” Moore said.

Yasumura was second in the shot put.

Sequim’s girls struggled in the team score — 46 points, third behind Port Angeles (88.5) and Olympic (54.5) — but got sterling performances from several athletes.

Despite finishing third, Sequim’s girls topped or tied 17 personal best marks at the meet.

Sarah Hutchison scored a win in the 100 hurdles, was second behind Olympic’s Ashli Payne in the 300 hurdles and was second in the pole vault.

Jasmine McMullin posted three top-three finishes, taking first in the triple jump, second in the 200 meters and third in the long jump.

Sequim’s 4x200 relay squad of Mandi England, Vanessa Ridgeway, Emily VanDyken and Hannah Hudson took top honors, as did the Wolves’ 4x400 relay team (England, McMullin, Hudson and VanDyken).

Sarah Henry was second in the discus and Hudson was runner-up in the 400-meter race.

“Good performances across the board,” Moore said. “Our young kids are getting better all the time.”

The Wolves are back in action on April 18 at home, their lone home meet of the season, taking on Klahowya and Port Townsend.
