One step closer.

Nine Sequim athletes had a total of 17 district-qualifying finishes and helped advance another four relay teams to the West Central Districts set for May 18-19 after a strong showing at a subdistrict meet in Port Angeles on Saturday.

Sequim’s boys saw junior Jayson Brocklesby break his own school mark in the high jump with a 6-foot 5-inch effort while the 4x100 relay team nearly set a school mark with a season-best 43.85-second finish — just three hundredths of a second off the Sequim High School record.

“It went well overall,” Sequim coach Brad Moore said. “It’s wonderful to see the kids perform well.”

Sequim’s boys finished fourth behind champ North Kitsap, Olympic and North Mason.

Sequim’s girls, led by sophomore Sarah Hutchison, placed fifth out of seven teams.

Hutchison nailed two top-three finishes in her hurdles events and cleared nine feet in the pole vault to finish third.

The Wolves’ girls’ squad was without 400 runner Hannah Hudson, who was out with an illness. She may compete in the relays at districts, Moore said.

Still, Sequim’s 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams are moving on to districts, as is Jasmine McMullin, who qualified in both the long jump and triple jump. Freshman Emily Van Dyken is headed to districts after placing fifth in the pole vault.

Brocklesby, bothered by an illness at the meet, managed not only to break the high jump mark but also to qualify in the 400 meters.

Lopaka Yasumura led a contingent of multi-event qualifiers, taking first in the shot put and fourth in the 100.

Emanuel Herrera is headed to districts in both hurdles events, just behind North Mason phenom Craig Allen.

Judah Breitbach was a three-time qualifier, earning district berths in 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and long jump events.

Also earning a district ticket was Adrian Clifford (1600) and Mack Grinnell (pole vault).

Sequim’s 4x400 relay squad also improved on a season best, with Dylan Chatters, Hamish Peers, Emanuel Herrera and Judah Breitbach coming in fifth overall.

“I’m pleased, even with the health (problems), the kids still gutted it out,” Moore said.

“We’ve got some kids who definitely stand a chance (of advancing to state).”

JV finishes season at home

Sequim’s girls took top honors while the Wolves’ boys placed second in a junior varsity league championship meet on May 9.

With four teams in attendance, Sequim’s girls took first place in eight events while the boys won six events.

Sam Lidstrom set a personal best in the discus at 110-1, while Janell Howatt took first (14.79) in the 100-meter sprint. Mikayla Simonson also set a personal record in the javelin with a 76-7 mark. Chatters won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter events.
