All aboard.

Sequim's boys cross country squad is headed back to the state 2A meet for the first time since 2008.

And if age is any indication, this may be the first of many cross-state trips.

The Wolves, led by a crew of mostly underclassmen, raced to a fourth-place finish at the Westside Classic, the West Central District 2A meet, at American Lake Golf Course near Tacoma on Oct. 27.

The class 2A state meet is set for Saturday, Nov. 3 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.

"They all had good races," Sequim coach Harold Huff said of his Wolves. "I think those hills (at American Lake) really helped. Those hills are hiccups but they're steep. This course is a little better than the league course for us."

In the process, Sequim beat out Olympic League rival Kingston by nine points. The Buccaneers finished fifth and will be racing at the state meet, as will Sumner, who edged Lindbergh by a point for the district title.

Sophomore Peter Ohnstad was the top Wolf with an 18th-place finish on the 5,000-meter course (17:14), but it was a flurry of purple and gold after that, with senior Adrian Clifford (20th, 17:22), sophomore Mikey Cobb (24th, 17:29), freshman C.J. Daniels (25th, 17:29), freshman Chris Jeffko (45th, 18:15), junior Dylan Chatters (46th, 18:15) and freshman Jackson Oliver (48th, 18:18) pushing the Wolves toward the top.

"Adrian and Mikey went out a little too fast and it slowed enough in the last mile (that) it cost them some places," Huff said, "(but) they all had good races."

Last year, Clifford was the lone Wolf representative. He placed 60th overall in his first state appearance.

This time, he'll have plenty of company.

Sequim's best finish at the state meet in the past decade is 10th place in 2006, the first of three consecutive state appearances.

"If we can get those five (top) guys to bump it up, I think we can do reasonably well at state," Huff said.

"There are some killer teams at state," he said, noting that Sehome is a good pick for boys state champ.

Sequim High's girls squad fell short of a state berth after finishing ninth out of out 11 teams at the district meet; only the top five girls teams earn state berths.

Freshman Emily Webb was the Wolves' top finisher, racing to a 21:57 mark. Sophomore Siana Turner was 39th (22:22) and senior Jasmine McMullin was 43rd (22:31).

Huff noted that both Webb and Turner both missed out on individual state berths by just a few seconds.

"They (Sequim's girls) ran their best race of the year," he said.

"We knew we weren't going to state on the girls side (but) out of my top five, three are coming back (next season)," Huff said. "If these girls work out in the summer, we're going to be very competitive."
