Along with the sixth-place class 2A state honors, two Wolves basketball players reached the upper echelon of Sequim’s best players.

Seniors Jayson Brocklesby and Gabe Carter now rank among Sequim’s ace shooters, rebounders, passers and defensive specialists.

Carter, an all-around-stats man for three years on varsity, grabbed two top honors as Sequim’s all-time rebounder and assists man.

He surpassed Derrin Doty’s rebound total of 497 in Kingston on Jan. 18 and finished with a career total of 609. Brocklesby sits at third all-time with 451.

Carter, who is 6-feet 4-inches tall, said he’s proud of the achievement.

“Rebounds aren’t always the stat that stands out to people,” he said.

“I hope somebody beats it. It’s more about the legacy of the team and not me holding a record for the team. I’m most proud that my assists have gone up each season.”

Carter took the assists record in the fourth/sixth-place 2A state tournament game against Clover Park, surpassing Ryan Kaps by two assists to finish with 383.

He sits at fourth all-time in a season with 131 assists and finished the season averaging 11 points per game, 7.5 rebounds per game, 1.1 blocks per game, 2.3 steals per game and 6.6 assists per game.

Doty (1986-1989) played about half varsity, half JV his sophomore season before starting — and making the all-league team — as a junior and senior. Carter played sparingly as a freshman on varsity before becoming a regular in the rotation his sophomore year.

Doty still holds the season rebound record with 245 as a senior, a 12.2-per-game clip, particularly impressive, since the forward stood just 6-feet 1-inch tall.

“I am proud of that (record) because my senior season I was the only rebounder we had at 6-1. Coach (Rick) Kaps took me aside and told me ‘Derrin, you have to get 10-15 rebounds a game for us to be successful.’ So that’s what I did.”

Doty offered his congratulations to Carter. “Records are made to be broken and 25 years is a good run!” Doty said.

Both Brocklesby and Carter took all-league first-team honors this season.

Brocklesby moved into second all-time as Sequim’s leading scorer during the playoffs with 1,231 points and Kaps well ahead with 1,961 points.

He scored in bunches, too, this season — 30 or more points in six games. He finished this season with the fifth most points (430) in a season and a season average of 20.4 points per game, 4.9 rebounds per game, 2 steals a game and 1.5 assists a game.

Brocklesby is second in postseason points with 262 and Carter is fourth with 194. The duo also shot efficient 2-pointers, tying for the regular season record percentage (at 64 percent) with James Brabant. Maintaining his efficient shooting, Carter nabbed the fourth spot as a career free-throw shooter with 76 percent, and nailing 107 3-pointers.

While the two friends were locks as offensive players, they didn’t slack on the defensive end.

Carter stole the ball 54 times this season making it the fourth most for the team, too. He also sent plenty of opponents’ shots back, moving into second place in blocks (86) behind Brady Marunde’s 107.
