My brain keeps wanting to sing "Happy Days Are Here Again," but they're not.

People still struggle to work within their household budgets. So, since it's going to be awhile until our pockets

are jingling with change, I'm going to tell you about a budget-conscious dining choice.

I'm recommending Arby's.

For $5.01 you can have a French Dip & Swiss on toasted ciabatta, your choice of drink (with unlimited refills while dining) and Arby's signature seasoned curly fries.

The first thing I noticed when I went through the doors was the decidedly more sophisticated decor. McDonald's "cartoon" atmosphere is geared toward young families. You still can feed the little ones here; you'll just feel a little bit more mature doing it.

'The place gleams'

Arby's interior surrounds you in a cocoon of muted earth tones. The framed artwork on the walls is a showcase of one of our more spectacular residents: the American bald eagle.

And the seating is just right: nice spacious comfy booths, intimate tables for two and tables for larger parties.

The place gleams. The kitchen shines in stainless steel. Hand sanitizer is on the counter. The bathrooms are clean, neat and well-stocked.

And the counter help is well, helpful. And well-trained; they know their stuff. They had to, I had a million questions never having dined at Arby's.

Web site choices

If you are on a diet, with a little customizing you should be able to find something that won't make you feel like you've irreparably fallen off the wagon.

In fact, their Web site allows you to put together your own meal combinations, check ingredients and search for food allergens. In short, a great easy way to make smart choices.

I was having a very late lunch. By then, seniors were beginning to arrive for dinner and friends were gathering to share a cup of joe.

There were several things I wanted to try but I was on my own today so no sharing with friends.

The Mozzarella Sticks with Marinara Sauce looked awfully good. So did the Jamocha Swirl Shake.

Fresh, fluffy bun

But I tried to be a good girl and ordered the oven-roasted sliced chicken sandwich on a fresh, fluffy, toasted sesame-seed bun. I coulda had bacon, I coulda had cheese, I coulda had barbecue sauce. But I ordered mine with only chicken, shredded lettuce, tomato and red onion.

OK, I'm a chicken - but there are plenty of choices with a tasty kick.

Mustard was at the counter, but serve-yourself condiments were ketchup, spicy three peppers, horsey sauce (horseradish and mayonnaise) and Arby's signature barbecue sauce.

Some other choices are "market fresh" sandwiches like their Reuben with juicy corned beef, melted Swiss and sauerkraut on toasted marble rye. Or try the Ultimate BLT with thick-cut pepper bacon, green leaf lettuce, ripe tomatoes and mayonnaise on thick-cut honey wheat bread.

Salads chop-chop

The "market fresh" chopped salads looked really good, too. Chopped Farmhouse Chicken has popcorn chicken and diced pepper bacon served with Dijon honey mustard dressing. The Chopped Turkey Club is served with buttermilk ranch.

I ordered the Chopped Italian (great to-go packaging). Very fresh lettuce and tomatoes, cheese, diced pepperoni and salami, and banana peppers.

They served it with a nice big packet of T. Marzetti Balsamic Vinaigrette; one of the best fast-food dressings.

Just want a quick snack? Try Onion Petals with Tangy Southwest Sauce; shredded crispy Potato Cakes; or deep-fried fluffy Potato Bites with cheese, bacon bits and ranch dipping sauce. Or their Popcorn Chicken: bite-sized and crispy with tangy barbecue sauce.

Rings the bell

Want a fiery treat? Order the Jalapeño Bites: halved peppers with melted cheese, battered and fried, with Bronco Berry Sauce.

Desserts include apple or cherry turnovers and chocolate chunk cookies.

To start your day, there are croissants, wraps or biscuits (and gravy) with choices of egg, sausage, chicken and cheese. And blueberry muffins or French Toastix, served warm and just the right shape to dip into your maple syrup.

While I dined in, I listened to XM 1960s radio: Peter and Gordon, "I've Got You Babe" and Procol Harum wafted through the air.

Check out Arby's Web site for cost-saving promotions and limited-time offers.

Right now it's Southwest Mini Egg Rolls. Packed with white meat chicken, jalapeño and red bell peppers, black beans, corn, spinach, zesty Southwest seasoning and a creamy blend of Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses served with cool Chili-Lime Ranch Sauce.

As I turned to leave, I noticed a bell hanging inside the entrance with a note that said, "Ring bell if your service was great."

I rang the bell on my way out the door and got a chorus of thank yous.
