Here comes the weekend, and, if you are like most of us, you choose
carefully how you'll spend those 72 hours. Here are some suggestions:
Friday-Saturday, March 19-20
• “Oaaak … lahoma!” If you know the rest of the words, you won’t want to miss PALOA’s presentation this summer. Better yet, audition and be a part of the fun from the beginning. “Oklahoma” is one of the best-loved musicals of all time. See Page C-7.
Saturday March 20
• Stamps and coins. People collect them because they are valuable or beautiful or because they follow an interesting theme or remind them of travels. Learn more today at Strait Stamp and Coin Collectors annual show. Bring the children, let them choose a few coins or stamps and start them off on a collection of their own. See Page C-6.
• Scotch broom, a shrubby yellow-blossomed plant, is invasive; it crowds out other plants including native ones. You can help limit its spread by cutting or pulling it up before it goes to seed and meet some other hard-workers at the same time. See Page C-7.
• Honey bees are valuable for pollination … and honey is, well, sweet. Learn the basics of becoming a beekeeper and helping maintain healthy honey bee populations at a class today put on by the local beekeepers’ club. See Page C-7.
Sunday March 21
• There are musical opportunities across the peninsula today, ranging from acoustic “old time” tunes, to lilting Irish melodies, to world music and jazz. Whether you choose based on time of day, location, cost or type of music, you are sure to enjoy the talented musicians and singers and find yourself tapping your feet or dancing. See Page C-6, 9.
• Every year, the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center puts on a show focusing on local artists. Strait Art 2010 is on now and makes it clear that this really is a mecca for creative, artistic people. The judges have a hard time making their choices because there are so many exceptional entries. See Page C-6.
