Parks seek nominations to boat safety council The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission is seeking nominations to its Boating Safety Advisory Council. The commission is looking for individuals to represent educators, anglers and hunters. Deadline for submitting nominations is Oct. 12. The council assists and advises the commission on administration of its boating safety program, which provides information and education on safe and environmentally sound boating practices to agencies, organizations and individuals statewide. The program also works closely with local marine law enforcement agencies, U.S. Power Squadrons, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and other boating safety educational organizations to assist their information, education and/or law enforcement efforts. Council members may be reimbursed for travel and other expenses when attending council meetings. Typically, there are two to three meetings a year. Citizens group host golf tourney fundraiser The Citizens for Sequim Schools, a grassroots group that helps pass school levy proposals, is hosting the first of what organizers hope is an annual golf tournament. The tourney is scheduled for an 8 a.m. start on Saturday, Sept. 26, at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road. Cost is $75 per person for the four-person scramble. The fee pays for lunch, tee prizes and golf carts. Players have a chance at winning an automobile. The tourney also features a raffle for a golf cart; tickets are $10 each. LaPush salmon derby slated The city of Forks, the Quileute Tribe and Forks Chamber of Commerce host the Last Chance Salmon Derby in LaPush from Sept. 26-27. The event pays cash prizes for largest coho and chinook (first-, second- and third-place fish take home cash) and a cash prize is offered for largest lingcod and largest bottom fish. Drawings for prizes for ticket holders take place on the dock at the end of the event. For more information, call 360-374-5412. Soccer challenge in P.A. The Port Angeles Recreation Division hosts the 2009 Soccer Challenge Skills Competition beginning at noon on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Civic Field, 300 N. Race St., Port Angeles. The event is a soccer skills competition for boys and girls ages 14 and younger. Skills tested are goal-shooting, timed dribbling, throw-ins, kick for distance and kick for accuracy. There is no participation fee. Top finishers in each age group advance to a state competition in Kent on Oct. 18. Participants should bring a copy of their birth certificate for age verification. Washington St.) are open 3-6 p.m. each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday through the end of the year. Youths who purchase a membership can hit at the cages for a $75 rate through the end of December. Owners Dan Perry and Kevin Royall said they are planning a batting league for businesses that begins when the Major League Baseball playoffs begin. The league is expected to last six weeks, with two games per week. The batting cages facility owners recently installed a weight training room. For more information, call 683-3357. P.A. hoops tourney set The Port Angeles Recreation Department hosts the Youth Tipoff Tourney, with divisions for boys and girls basketball teams in fifth grade up through high school ages, on Nov. 7-8.
