WOLVES SWIMMERS SHOW IMPROVEMENT IN LOSS AT KLAHOWYA

Facing a team of similar size, Sequim’s swimmers got more than a fighting chance for a win last week — and nearly got it.

Klahowya, swimming with nine athletes — edged Sequim’s eight-member team 72-65 on Sept. 23 in Silverdale.

The meet came just eight days after Sequim’s 144-28 defeat at the hands of a Port Angeles team nearly three times its size.

“The abilities (of the two teams) were pretty similar,” Sequim coach Linda Moats said. “They were able to place at least one swimmer in each event, whereas we left three events totally blank.”

Despite the loss, Sequim’s Rachel Hardy was able to post district meet-qualifying swims in both 100 free (1:01.88) and 100 backstroke (1:14.54) events.

Teammate Rachel Hughes also qualified for district in the 100 back (1:20.22).

Six Sequim swimmers posted best times. Autumn Kessinger and Natalie McMurray each bettered their 50 free times by three seconds while Victoria Rodger topped her 50 free best by 12 seconds. Rodger topped her 100 free time by 15 seconds.

Anna Mittmann topped her previous 100 free time by 21 seconds and her 100 breaststroke time by 10 seconds.

“She went out rather moderately (in the 100 breast event), but by the end she was steaming full-speed ahead and came from far behind to almost catch (Klahowya’s) Katy Seal,” Moats said. “It was fantastic. Anna has great potential to become a wonderful breaststroke swimmer.”

No Sequim swimmers were disqualified for swimming infractions this meet.

“We were all happy about that,” Moats added.

The Wolves (0-1 in league, 0-2 overall) were scheduled to swim at Bainbridge Sept. 29 — results were unavailable at press time.

Sequim hosts its first home meet of the season on Thursday, Oct. 1, against Port Townsend.
