As the old cliché goes, when it rains, it pours.

Olympic’s Trojans made sure Sequim was reminded of that last week in a 9-0 win against the young, struggling Wolves on Oct. 13.

Megan Smith and Anndrea O’Leary each had two goals and Smith added a pair of assists as Olympic kept a hold of second place in the Olympic League before their big match-up with North Kitsap on Oct. 15 (North Kitsap prevailed, 3-1).

O’Leary, Smith and Hana Geyer each had first-half scores as Olympic took a 3-0 lead by halftime.

“I think they (Sequim’s girls) are having a rough time,” Wolves’ coach Enid Halewyn said. “It’s tough. Some of them have played on teams where they’re used to winning. The good news is in their playing, they’re not giving up.”

The Wolves got a much-needed bye on Oct. 15 as the rest of the league saw action.

Sequim (0-8-1 in league, 1-9-1 overall) now has lost nine consecutive games — six by shutout — after starting the season with a win versus Forks and a 3-3 tie with North Mason.

Halewyn said the key to turning the program around is players making the commitment to playing year-round, whether it be in an indoor league, the women’s spring league or the summer high school league Halewyn helped organize last year.

“It’s going to be up to the girls whether they make it happen or not,” she said. “The talent is here.”

Sequim was scheduled to play at Klahowya on Oct. 20.

The Wolves are at Kingston on Oct. 22, then finish the season against Port Townsend on Oct. 27 and North Mason two days later.
