The Crossing Church has made the move to include Sequim as part of its Sunday repertoire.
Pastor Glen Douglas said church staff and a few transplants have been leading and participating in services for almost two months at Sequim Holiday Inn Express and Conference Center prior to the original service at Deer Park Cinema in Port Angeles. They plan to host their kick-off event at 8:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, to coincide with a mass mailer of 12,300 information cards going out this week from Carlsborg to Diamond Point.
“At the heart of who I am, I’m a church planter,” Douglas said. “With the church in Port Angeles taking off, we wanted to look around and see what we could do with the staff we have now. Port Angeles and Sequim are relatively close, so we decided to do a multi-site church. Dave (Burrows, music and children’s ministries coordinator) and I could do both.”
The Port Angeles church holds its service at 10 a.m. Douglas plans to lead sermons at each site while Burrows leads music in Sequim and joins the latter half of the second service.
Douglas said he and church members have been praying for guidance about starting a ministry in Sequim for a few years.
“We’re going to offer the same we do at the venue in Port Angeles,” Douglas said. “Our tag line is ‘casual environment, serious faith.’ What we can offer is the solid teaching of the word of God in an environment that’s nontraditional.”
Douglas said the church’s intent is not to pull people away from other churches but to engage those who desire a more casual, all-ages environment.
Sequim residents Eric and Michelle Palenik have been attending The Crossing in Port Angeles for about a year. They decided to attend the new service and lend their support.
Eric Palenik said his family, including a 3-year-old and newborn daughters, attends the church because it’s a great opportunity to provide a family centered church in this area.
“It has a family environment here,” Palenik said. “It’s a very low pressure, Bible-centered church.”
Douglas said he’s the first to admit the church focuses on the younger generation, but he isn’t going to exclude senior members.
“They are going to fit well if they have that vision for equipping the younger generation,” Douglas said. “The older folks who attend Port Angeles have that vision and I hope in Sequim the same will happen.”
The Port Angeles church has grown from its first meetings at Douglas’ home in 2005 to a weekly attendance of about 140 people in Port Angeles, with a small congregation in Sequim as well.
“Originally we were looking to do it at the new Sequim theater, but it was put on the shelf,” Douglas said. “So we began looking around and then they built the Holiday Inn Express with the conference center.”
He said attendees appreciate the facility and the early 8:30 a.m. meeting time because typically they have later commitments.
Talking about expansion of the Sequim church is premature, Douglas said, but the church as a whole is growing spiritually.
“Really, our progression is that we’re really starting to mature as a congregation,” Douglas said.
“The next step is to continue deepening of who we are as a church. Once Sequim is established, then we’ll begin looking more to the future. It is the same vision, same church, with the hope to integrate the two congregations and take on some things together that they couldn’t do alone.”
As the Sequim branch expands, Douglas said he’s open to doing more services and whatever appeals to the church community.
For now, the Port Angeles church will remain at Deer Park Cinema. Douglas said they’ve looked into constructing a permanent church building of their own, but they don’t know God’s will yet. The Crossing members also are beginning a service ministry of yard work and clean-up for those in hospice care or otherwise in need.
