The professional and amateur artists whose work is displayed in "Embracing Life through Art … the Journey Back" share a life-changing experience: the challenge of cancer. How they have taken the challenge and made art of it is the theme of the show that runs through Oct. 31 at the Landing Art Gallery, 115 Railroad Ave., Port Angeles.

The exhibit also is part of the Second Saturday Art Walk, beginning at 11 a.m. Oct. 13; music that day will be provided by Tolua Mua.

Exhibition directors are Sky Heatherton, R.N., of Assured Hospice of Clallam and Jefferson Counties, and Sharon Shenar, manager of the Landing Art Gallery. Heatherton organized the first such exhibition in October 2011 after recovering from breast cancer and a double mastectomy. Painting helped her get through the ordeal and she found that art had helped other survivors as well.

Sequim artists in this year's exhibition include Andrew Courtney, Pamela Dick, Judy English, Anne Goetzman, Bob Lee, Sherry Mizuta, Serena Mylchreest, Jack Parcell, Linda Parcell, Martha Rudersdorf, Libby Sweetser and Janet Watral. Sequim artists exhibiting on the Tribute Wall in honor of lost friends and loved ones include Iris Edey, Linda Stadtmiller and Patricia Starr.

The exhibition is free.
