Artist Susan Martin Spar discusses her process with oil paintings like "Red Riding Hood" to Sequim Arts and community members Oct. 25.

Award-winning Port Angeles artist Susan Martin Spar is the guest presenter at the next Sequim Arts meeting Thursday, Oct. 25, at St. Luke's Episcopal Hall, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Visitors are welcome to the free meeting.

Members will gather at 9:30 a.m. for refreshments, with a short meeting at 10 a.m. followed by Spar's demonstration of her process of portraiture from inspiration to finished oil painting.

“First there must be inspiration or a concept which is followed by carefully choosing the model, then the life and photographic sessions.  The work begins in earnest with the initial drawing and corrections, then on to the transfer process and finally to putting pigment onto canvas. Getting the under painting correct is as important as the final rendering itself if the painting is to be a success,” said Spar.

Born and raised in New York, Spar received her early training from The Fashion Institute of Technology before moving to California in the 1980s where she studied at the Watts Atelier in Encinitas. Spar completed her classical training in a three-year intensive program of figure drawing and painting at Georgetown Atelier in Seattle. Spar teaches these same methods of the masters in her weekly “Mini Atelier” class on Wednesdays where her students work from both live models and still-life set-ups throughout the day.
