Valentines for the troops

Happy Valentine's Day! Please remember our troops - they love to get cards, e-mails, calls and letters.
They need your love and support to carry them through the tough days. Our veterans like to get smiles and hellos also; it makes their day!
_ Washington State Gold Star License Plates are available. For those of you not familiar with the Blue Star and Gold Star program, let me give you some background.
A Blue Star parent is one who has a child serving on active duty. A Gold Star parent is one whose child has died while in service to their country or as a result of such service.
To apply for the license plate or get specific information, go to http://www.dva.wa.gov/GoldStarParentLicensePlates.html.
__My faithful readers will remember my asking your support last year for Operation Landstuhl.
With your help, the American Legion family raised nearly $350,000 to purchase comfort items for the wounded warriors at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
This year, Operation Comfort Warriors is targeting the help for military and VA medical centers.
You can donate online at www.legion.org/ocw or mail a check to Operation Comfort Warriors, P.O. Box 1055, Indianapolis, IN 46206.
Administrative and promotional costs for the program will be paid for by the American Legion. Your entire donation will go to purchasing comfort items for the troops.

_ The Military Officers Association of America, Olympic Peninsula Chapter, is having a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, at the CrabHouse Restaurant in Port Angeles.
All military officers, active duty and retired, are welcome to attend. The speaker will be Kaj Ahlburg, speaking on the Muslim religion, Islam.
Please call me at 683-6419 to make a reservation.
_ The Veterans Relief fund was established by the Lloyd Strand Family in Sequim to assist all families of active duty personnel, veterans, families of veterans, widows and widowers of veterans.
VFW Post 4760 oversees the distribution of the funds for rent, electric bills, food, medical assistance, etc., to those who apply.
They need to see a DD214 of the veteran and proof of discharge or proof of active duty status. There should be a valid need that cannot be filled by any other agency.
Call the VFW at 683-9546 between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday to set up an appointment to meet with the committee.
In the present economic climate, the VFW wants to make sure everyone gets the word about this vital program that helps our service personnel and their families.
