The VFW is hosting the Four Chaplains Service this year, led by Chaplain Dale Butler. The ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 4, in the second-floor meeting room at the VFW Post.
This ceremony emphasizes the cooperation and commitment between the chaplains of four different faiths and suggests ways we can use this lesson in our lives today. All are welcome to attend and hear the story of the torpedoing of the U.S.A.T. Dorchester on Feb. 3, 1943, and the four chaplains who perished after giving their life jackets to others.
Happy New Year!
I was elected president of the Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America at its December luncheon. It is an honor to head this group. We are involved with legislation affecting the military, the NJROTC Unit at Port Angeles High School, keeping informed on current issues and having a good time!
If you are or were an officer in any U.S. service and are interested in belonging, give me a call at 683-6419.
Pipe up the band
The American Legion and the VFW are asking for donations to bring The Clan Gordon Pipe Band to march in the Irrigation Festival parade with the veterans groups. Everyone seemed to enjoy them last year, and they put on a great show in the VFW.
If you would like to contribute, send a check to American Legion Post 62, P.O. Box 1607, Sequim, WA 98382, and mark it for the Bag Pipe Band.
Toys for Tots
Some result information on the Toys For Tots program: 6,381 toys were distributed to 2,127 children. That comes out to three toys per child. DSHS, the Salvation Army, Foster Parents and local church organizations distributed the toys.
The two Walmarts, Sequim Lavender Growers Association, UMW Community Missions and Gaydeski Gifts were major donors. Thank you to all who contributed toys and/or money so Clallam County children could have a merry Christmas.
John Spriggs Jr., vice commandant of the local Marine Corps League, is collecting books (hardbacks are OK), computer games, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes and puzzle books for the veterans in the Seattle VA hospital and the hospital at American Lake. If you have things to donate, call John at 460-7633.
