Conrad, who lives in Oso, set out in the spring of 2010 on a solo trip in an 18-foot kayak, named Chamellia, that took her 1,200 miles from Anacortes to Juneau, Alaska. In her book, she tells of her adventures, exhilaration and fears.
She has been involved in the paddlesports industry for 25 years and holds an American Canoe Association Level IV Open Water Coastal certification.
She also has been a personal fitness trainer, ski patroller, avalanche team leader, whitewater raft guide, graphic designer, photojournalist and marketing specialist, according to her website at www.susanmarieconrad.com, where she adds that she’s “50-something and plans on habitual escapades from Puget Sound to Alaska well into her nineties.”
