John Lucas

Teeing up a Christmas poem

'Twas the night before the tourney and all through the course,

Not a creature was stirring, not even in the gorse.

The clubs in the rack were all stacked with care,

In hopes that the players soon would be there.

The caddies were all snug in their beds, the carts all fitted with a flap,

So to prepare for a coming cold snap.

Then in the lot there arose such a clatter,

The starter awoke to see what was the matter.

Then the pro went to his window like a flash,

And tore open the shutter and threw up the sash,

The sparkle of dawn on the new fallen snow,

Gave a new luster to the course below.

But what to his wandering eye should appear,

Along with a new sound in his ear.

Were many cars arriving so lively and quick,

He was so sure this wasn't a trick.

More rapidly than eagles they came,

And he whistled and shouted to each their name.

Hey Tiger, Ernie, Vijay and Fred:

Didn't you know I was still in my bed?

To the top of the porch and then to the tee,

Came Furyk, Funk, Annika and Wie.

Then came the sound of some hooves on the ground,

And so all were compelled to turn right around,

And just like magic he suddenly appeared,

A man in a red suit with a long white beard.

He shouted and said, "This is an Open!" and I paid my fee,

So by the rules you must admit me.

On the first hole he drove with such force,

And continued to do so for the rest of the course.

When he was done to everyone's surprise,

He went in the tent to collect first prize.

Then just as quickly as he came,

He mounted the deer and took off like a flame.

In the distance far into his flight,

They heard a Thank you, Merry Christmas and to all a good night.

Merry Christmas, all!
