In order to prevent possible boredom in the two-month school break, the Sequim Boys & Girls Club staff has organized activities to keep the members learning and occupied.

According to volunteer Stephen Rosales, for the second summer in a row the club has divided the summer into theme weeks and filled those weeks with activities.

The first week, beginning June 23, is titled “Space Invaders” and features a guest who is experienced with space.

“We’re having a former NASA employee come in and talk about a space shuttle flight,” said the club’s grant writer Dwayne Jensen.

Jensen added that the presentation will include photos of the complete space shuttle journey, plus a 4.5-foot working model of an actual shuttle. The members also get to taste the ice cream that NASA astronauts eat while in space.

During week 8, “Survival Week,” Rosales said the children will go on hikes and learn wilderness survival skills.

The summer program kicks off with a barbecue at Marlyn Nelson County Park off Port Williams Road.

“We hope to get 100 kids a day,” Rosales said, estimating that last summer the club had 70 to 90 children per day.

Some funding for the summer program came from a club-sponsored car show that was held Memorial Day weekend.

“It was our first car show — we didn’t know what to expect,” Rosales said. The event turned out to be a success and $2,000 was raised for the summer activities.

The theme weeks will be peppered with some other fun including bike raffles and trips to Mariner games.

“We’re pretty excited about it,” Rosales said.
