The reading bug

More than 100 children and 50 adults gathered outside the Sequim branch of the North Olympic Library System to watch Seattle-area magician Jeff Evans awe them with tricks centered around bugs. Among them were 1-year-old Kinzley Henrickson and her 6-week-old brother Bjorn. “It’s never too early to start a love for reading,” said their mother Robin Henrickson. “We plan to come for all the events we can make.”

This summer marks the second year the Sequim Library has participated in organized summer programs and library employees would like to see all of Sequim’s children participate.

“We have a multitude of people that we draw on from our area,” said Patty Swingle, senior public service assistant.

The Sequim branch is following the statewide library summer program theme this year — “Catch the Reading Bug” — and Swingle said visitors are centering their activities around crawly creatures.

Each Wednesday morning through July entertainers including jugglers, musicians and puppeteers visit Sequim from all over Washington, armed with knowledge and fun for children. “I was blessed with a lot of good talent,” Swingle said of the visitors. “The kids are having a great time.”

The events are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays through July 30 and all events are free. Most events are drop-in, but registration is required for the July 23 visit from the Pacific Science Center. For more information, call the Sequim Library at 683-1161.
