From hip-hop dance to puppet-eers to sign language, by the end of Sequim Community Church’s weeklong summer camp, attending children will be experts at various art forms.

Starting Aug. 4, Sequim children have the opportunity to attend SCC’s 11th annual “MAD Camp,” a program where they can receive instruction in music, arts, drama and dance.

“They’re getting instructed by some really good talent,” said Peggy McKellar, SCC children’s director. “It’s a very well-run program.”

The children are offered eight programs — art, crafts, dance, drama, hand chimes, percussion, puppets and sign language — and given the opportunity to choose two to study during the course of the week, along with choir and Bible Time, which all of the students attend.

According to McKellar, all instructors are from the Sequim area and most attend SCC. The music instructor, Joel Rosenauer, is SCC’s worship director.

“He is an incredible guitar player and vocalist,” McKellar said. “The kids just learn so much.”

According to McKellar, who said she’s expecting anywhere from 40 to 60 youths, the group performs the songs, dances and skits they perfected all week for the Sunday morning service at SCC.

“I think it’s a wonderful thing for the kids in the community … when you’re getting wonderful instruction,” McKellar said. “It’s a neat way to introduce kids to the arts in a way where it is not intimidating … it exposes them to some new areas.”

The Aug. 4-8 camp runs from 9 a.m.-noon and is open to all children who will be entering second through sixth grades this fall. The cost of registration is $35 per child and some scholarships are available. The children will need to be available to perform at the 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. SCC services on Sunday, Aug. 10.
