Kids fair slated for Saturday at Carrie Blake Park

Have children and itching to get out of the house this weekend?

The Dungeness Kids Fair will take place at Carrie Blake Park and inside the Guy Cole Center Saturday, May 30.

Coined the "Dungeness Baby Fair" last year, organizers decided to change the name, expand the vendor list and provide more live entertainment this time around.

"We wanted to reach a wider audience," said founder Susan Baritelle about the name change.

"Several of the vendors who participated last year were geared toward toddlers and preschoolers."

Baritelle thought up the idea last year and hopes to make it an annual event.

"Having a young child here, I've found there are a lot of services available that people just don't know about," she said.

"I don't think people even realize how many young families there really are here until they all gather in one spot."

About 900 people attended the fair last year. Baritelle is expecting just as many, if not more, this year. Because parking was a problem last year, overflow parking will be directed to the Trinity United Methodist Church lot.

Music classes, story time, face painting, animal balloons and arts and crafts projects are just a few of the activities on the agenda.

The Sequim Police Department will be on site to give car-seat inspections and instruct parents on how to keep children safe while traveling.

The Clallam County Fire District No. 3 will have a fire truck available for children to climb on and explore.

Sequim Pre-Three will have an informational booth about the cooperative preschool program for children 10 months to 31/2 years old.

First Teacher and the Parenting Matters Foundation will hand out information about the program as well as giving away coloring books and crayons.

The Clallam County Literacy Council also plans to give away free books and literacy materials to inspire children and parents to participate in daily story time.

The Blooming Brush will have a pottery booth for children and adults to create projects for Father's Day.

"Basically, it's a farmer's market for kids," Baritelle said.

"It's going to be a really fun time."
