Kennel club hosts trials

The Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club, based in Sequim, is the largest dog club on the Northern Olympic Peninsula, currently with 93 members.

The club hosts some of the largest dog shows and competitions annually in the region with two Agility trials (May and August), an All-Breed Dog Shows and Obedience Trial (July), which draws competitors from across the country and, earlier this year, the club held its first Draft Test which drew participants from Canada, Oregon and Eastern Washington.

"The Agility trials held last weekend included 287 dogs, a drop in numbers due to the Hood Canal bridge closure, but still a very good turnout under the circumstances. Generally, this event draws significantly more entries," said Elaine Booker, the club's treasurer and newsletter editor.

In addition to hosting these events, the HRKC promotes responsible pet ownership within the community and supports canine rescue groups and the local Olympic Peninsula Humane Society through donations.

In the recent past, HRKC joined in the support of other organizations that are devoted to raising funds to purchase protection equipment for working K-9s, such as the "cool coats" for the military dogs in Iraq.

"We host these trials and invite the public to see the positive activities people can share with their dogs," Booker said. "No community is as supportive as a dog community."

Anyone interested in becoming a member of the HRKC is invited to attend a club meeting, every third Wednesday at 7 p.m., at Greywolf Veterinary Hospital.
