The ripple effect of Washington's multibillion dollar budget shortfall still is causing waves in school districts across the state.

Sequim is no different.

The Sequim School District's board of directors has approved cutbacks to the district's corps of secretaries, teacher aides, custodians, maintenance crew and transportation staff.

A total of 19 teacher's aides, known in the district as para-educators, received Reduction-in-Force notices.

The notices indicate the district does not intend to offer the employee a position for the next school year, although Sequim schools superintendent Bill Bentley said he is optimistic about rehiring a number of the personnel.

A total of 19 para-educators received RIF notices, while two will see days cut from their current contracts.

Two custodians/maintenance workers are being cut from the district; four others will lose 24 days from their current contracts and five others will lose four days.

Two secretaries received RIF notices; 10 more will have two days reduced form their current contracts.

Four transportation department employees are to work fewer hours next school year. Jeff Gossage, the district's transportation supervisor, saw his contract reduced by 10 working days.

The cuts are expected to save the school district more than $200,000.
