Ten fifth-graders from Greywolf and Helen Haller elementary schools sliced and diced their way into culinary competition on May 30.

The students participated in the first "Kids Can Cook Competition," sponsored by Sodexo, Sequim School District's food service.

Earlier in May, students submitted healthy after-school snack recipes, which a committee then chose.

On the day of competition, snacks were prepped in the Sequim High School cafeteria with food service staff from each school.

Students prepared precisely sliced fruit, blended smoothies, cooked ham rolls, baked peaches and more. Parents and family members watched but were not allowed to help.

Categories and winners were:

"Health Conscious Food," Kregg Thaens from Helen Haller, chef salad.

"Fun Kids' Food," Wyatt Lato from Greywolf, mini-bagel pizza bites.

"Simple and Kid Friendly Prep," Chaela Cashman from Greywolf, banana boat over flow

Other students who participated were Stephen Silliman, Hayes David Clawson and Savanna Fowler from Helen Haller; and Kayla Owens, Jared Brauner and Daniel Harker from Greywolf.

"Judges Choice," Thomas Winfield from Helen Haller, baked peaches.

Greywolf Elementary staff won a plaque for "Best Table Decoration" and each school library received new food books.

All students received a gift bag with kitchen tools, an apron and a chef hat.

Laurie Campen, Sodexo food service director, said she hopes to make this an annual event for fifth-graders.
