Submissions are being accepted for the 2010 Sequim Irrigation Festival logo design. The theme for the 2010 festival is "115 Years of Pioneers."
History is everywhere around Sequim, but some of it can be found only at the museum, in historical references and in the memories of our pioneers. Aside from our pioneers, there is little to help us remember the trains that used to travel through Sequim.
The railroad reached
Sequim in 1915 and carried passengers from Port Townsend and Port Angeles. With the arrival of the railroad, Sequim became the agricultural marketing center of the Peninsula.
Passenger service was ended in 1931 and freight service continued until 1986 when the Milwaukee line abandoned the railroad and the tracks were removed.
Today the Sequim bypass follows part of the rail line, and the Olympic Discovery Trail utilizes much of the former right of way.
Trains and a railroad concept will be used to convey the 2010 theme. Organizers envision the float for the 115th Irrigation Festival as a train running over the Railroad Bridge above the flowing Dungeness River.
The logo design contest entries will be accepted from artists of any age in either Clallam or Jefferson county.
The selected logo design will be used for the collectible festival lapel pins, posters, programs, advertising, festival events and T-shirts. There will be a separate contest beginning in September among elementary students (first through fifth grade) to design the festival button.
Full rules, prizes and additional concept information are available at www.IrrigationFestival.com, Making of the Festival: Design Contest.
Entries must be postmarked by Aug. 28. Submit to Irrigation Festival Logo Contest, P.O. Box 3201, Sequim, WA 98382. Call 477-3750 for questions.
