The Sequim Valley Lions Club will present the Lions Health Screening Unit in front of Safeway, 620 W. Washington St., Sequim, from 10 a.m.-

4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 29.

The traveling RV team will screen people's blood pressure, sight and hearing while testing for glaucoma and diabetes.

"The whole point of it is to catch things early," said Arndt Lorenzen, a Sequim Lions member.

Hundreds of Lions clubs in Washington, Oregon

and western Idaho sponsor the health unit that travels the region providing the free screening.

"You don't need an appointment, so just show up," Lorenzen said.

The first health unit came to Sequim in 1997 for two days and served 179 people, Lions president Betty Wilkerson said.

"It's very friendly," she added.

Those with visible problems are referred to their respective doctors or specialists for further examination. All volunteers in the health screening are licensed or certified doctors, nurses and/or technicians in their respective fields.

"We hope to get some referrals for people so that they can see better and live better," said Jack Napiontek, a Lions member.

The Lions health screening also will run, 10 a.m.-

4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 27, at Port Angeles' Walmart; and 10 a.m.-

6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, at Port Townsend's Safeway.

More information on the Lions Club and its upcoming motorcycle run on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Olympic Power Sports, 221 S. Peabody St.,

Port Angeles, can be found at the health screening or by calling Arndt Lorenzen at 683-7550.
