As the season begins to shift, so does the selection of local produce at the Sequim Open Aire Market.
The berries of early and midsummer are replaced by apples and pears. Beans give way to a fall round of snap peas. Amazing potatoes are dug weekly, while the short-lived summertime treats corn and tomatoes hang on as long as our farmers can manage.
A slowly changing selection of locally grown produce is one of the joys at the market. But the market is more than produce, which is why many regular shoppers will be pleased that local honey has returned.
We welcome Elwha Apiary to the Open Aire Market and encourage you to learn more about this delicious, local, healthy food product. Vendor Garry Flynn - whose primary business is decorative and functional sand-blasted glassware - also offers local honey at his booth.
The Open Aire Market features talented local artists and artisans who offer their wares. Visitors can learn about the stone in a piece of jewelry from the artist who cut, polished and set it. Wood artists bring handcrafted boxes, furniture and clocks. Glass is blown, fused and sandblasted.
Clothing ranges from vintage children's, to modern tie dye, to stylish and modern designs for adults. Traditional soaps and body products can be found alongside patented salves and lotions.
Live music is a weekly tradition. Steve Koehler and Paul Stehr-Green's set from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. will feature Steve's fun vocals and hot guitar work alongside Paul's solid base guitar.
Featured community organizations are the Grand Olympic Chorus, Soroptimist International of Sequim and Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Last 'full' market
The Open Aire Market has been expanding the past few seasons and this year has a new autumn schedule. The final "full" market is Saturday, Oct. 3, and the atmosphere will be particularly festive as we say goodbye to the majority of craft vendors until winter indoor events begin in November.
The remaining Saturdays in October, we debut our new schedule of Market Square Saturdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Harvest season remains in full swing and farm and local food vendors will bring as many fall vegetables and fruits as they can produce and harvest. Even a pre-Thanksgiving market is planned for holiday meal shopping.
