Launching Olympic Theatre Arts' 2009-2010 season, "Same Time, Next Year" opens Sept. 25 in OTA's banquet hall at 414 N. Sequim Ave.
The romantic comedy follows George and Doris through a 25-year affair during which they meet once
each year from 1951-1975. In the course of their relationship, shown in five scenes, they reveal snapshots of American life. The play touches on such wide-ranging issues as nuclear proliferation and the tooth fairy.
On a deeper level, the play explores the profound effect of long-term, loving relationships, not only between George and Doris but between them and their marriage partners. The play is intended for mature audiences.
"It's really very funny," said director Loren Johnson.
"It shows how their lives change and American society changed" over the course of their relationship.
In 1975 the play, by Bernard Slade, was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Play. The 1978 film adaptation starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn also received many Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Nicholas Pruznick plays George.
"We're having fun at it," Pruznick said. He is returning to the stage after a break of about 10 years.
Alexandria Edouart, a retired nurse, plays Doris, seeing her through the struggles of women's liberation and family issues.
Johnson directed "True West" for OTA last year and works as OTA's business manager.
With this play, OTA productions return to the Sequim Avenue location where the main stage is under construction. "Same Time, Next Year" will run in the banquet hall, formerly called the gathering hall. OTA plans to open the main stage in February with the musical "Cabaret."
