Editor's note: Today begins a new weekly feature on the C/StraitScenes page, a survey of the coming weekend with recommendations of what events promise to give the best return for your time or money.



Here it comes, the weekend, and if you're like most of us, you choose carefully how you'll spend those 72 hours. Here are some suggestions:



_ Watercolors are popular on the peninsula and members of the North Olympic Watercolorists are showing some of their best at a just-opened show at the Gallery at the Fifth in Sequim. See C-6.



_ Sequim has many talented professional and amateur artists and many of the best belong to Sequim Arts. Each year, its members' show and sale showcases these talented men and women. The show isn't pretentious and the prices aren't outrageous. Whether you visit to buy or just to look, you'll come away impressed by what you see. See C-6.



_ The Port Angeles Symphony. Always good and frequently great, the symphony's season opener features a new instrument - tap shoes, on the feet of tap master Alex Dugdale. The morning rehearsal is fun and often includes explanations that help listeners understand the conductor's role. A pre-concert chat familiarizes listeners with what's to come and the evening concert can be a fancy dress-up time or as casual as you wish. For details, see C-6.



_ If foreign films are your favorites, see some of the best at Peninsula College in Port Angeles. Friday's films are from Kazakhastan and China. See C-6.



_ Many of us play the guitar, a little. Someone who plays it a lot is Paul Chasman and he'll be presenting a one-man, four-guitar festival Friday at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center. Whether your guitar dreams include jazz, blues, classical, bluegrass, ragtime or rock, he has the instrument and skill to make it real. Better yet, it's a fundraiser to support the new P.A. Arts Council so you'll be doing good as you're enjoying the music. See C-6.
