Whether you want to buy or sell furniture, Sequim Consignment Co. can help. Owner Brian Barrick opened the store recently with a focus on selling good quality used furniture.
After looking at stores in the area, Barrick "saw a real hole in the market" and spent several weeks looking at how higher-quality used furniture is sold in other areas. He found others doing it really well and thought this would meet a need in the community.
Judging by the response in the first few weeks, he was right. Barrick calls the interest in consigning "really strong."
Like a two-sided coin, Barrick said, "You have to have willing buyers and willing sellers." The store is generating a steady stream of both, and consequently the merchandise changes frequently.
Looking for mix
"We're not so concerned about age," Barrick said of the furniture he accepts for consignment, "but we are very particular about condition. We're looking for things with appeal and need to keep a good mix."
That mix makes the shopping experience interesting, too. The current supply includes items for every room in the house, including furniture, artwork, lamps and home décor.
A person who wants to sell furniture at the store should call Barrick or stop by to talk to him at the store before bringing anything in. It is helpful to bring a photo of the item.
"I need to see the goods one way or another," Barrick said.
He is seeking primarily contemporary furniture but will consider older pieces and antiques if they are in very good condition and fit with the current mix in the store. Barrick has a truck for pick-ups and deliveries.
Barrick's consignment agreement is for a 90-day period. The seller and store agree on a price at the time of consignment.
When the item sells, the seller gets 65 percent of the sales price and the store keeps the balance. If items do not sell in the first few weeks of the consignment period, the price will be reduced.
"We're really gratified by the response," he said. "People are saying good things about what they see here." Between new consignments and sales, the merchandise changes with every visit. "There's a constant flow," Barrick said.
