Bridge testing

Drivers planning to cross the Hood Canal bridge should plan for 40-minute daytime ballast test openings on Wednesday-Thursday Jan. 6-7.

Test openings are scheduled for 9 a.m. both days.

Motorists also should take note that traffic resulting from these openings can take longer to dissipate.

No nighttime test openings are scheduled.

Additional bridge openings for marine vessels will occur as needed.

Checkpoints group meets

Stop The Checkpoints committee meets from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, in the Sequim Library meeting room, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

There will be a short presentation on the history of guestworker laws in the United States, with some readings from David Bacon's book "Illegal People."

The group works to defend civil liberties, stop racial profiling and defend immigrant workers and families.

Concerned Citizens of Clallam County hosts a meet and greet with United States Senate candidate Sean Salazar from 4-5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, at the Guy Cole Convention Center, Carrie Blake Park, Blake Avenue, Sequim.

Beta Nu awards grants

The Beta Nu chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma awarded grants totaling $8,800 to Clallam County educators for their continued studies or certification.

Grants were made available through a gift from the estate of longtime Port Angeles School District educator Helen Gariepy.

Recipients are Kevin Magner, Bettina Hoesel, Brian Berg, Charles Kleinberg, John Cole, Peter Walchenbach, Renee Mullikin, Isaac Rapelje and Brad Moore.

All nine of this year's recipients were from the Sequim School District.

Grants will be available again in April for all teachers in Clallam County. Applications are available at the district offices.
