Work has begun to repair a landslide-damaged section of Hurricane Ridge Road that has shut off access to the Hurricane Ridge winter recreation area.
The contract was awarded Friday morning, Jan. 22, to Bruch & Bruch Construction Inc., of Port Angeles. Repairs are expected to take up to six weeks.
Bruch & Bruch employees began moving equipment to the landslide site one-half mile north of the Heart O’ the Hills entrance station over the past weekend. The contractor will work 12 hours a day Monday through Saturday.
The estimated repair cost is $2 million. The contractor is authorized to spend up to $1.4 million, with the remainder provided within several weeks.
100-foot section The road was closed Monday, Jan. 18, when a slope below the roadway slid downhill, taking with it most of both travel lanes along a 100-foot-long section of road.
The road was closed to all entry: bicycle, foot, stock and vehicle.
The slide area remains active and soil continues moving downslope, undercutting the remaining narrow strip of asphalt.
“We are extremely pleased to have a contract in place so quickly,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Karen Gustin.
“A federal contract of this size usually takes four months to complete — I’m very grateful to both park staff and our federal highways partners for their work in making an award in only four days.”
Bypass won’t work “We understand the importance of this road to our region, and restoring access to Hurricane Ridge as quickly as possible continues to be the park’s top priority right now,” Gustin said.
A bypass around the slide area is not feasible due to the washout’s size and location and a repair project’s cost and schedule, she said.
