Chamber of Commerce names Citizen of Year finalists

The Sequim Gazette learned at press time that the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce has selected its finalists for 2009 Citizen of the Year and Community Service Awards.

In alphabetical order, they are:

• Joe Borden: Nominated for his involvement in the Irrigation Festival, Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and various committees, Patriotic Guard Riders, Veterans of Foreign Wars and other volunteer efforts.

• Dr. Cynthia Martin: Nominated for her involvement with Parenting Matters Foundation, Prevention Works Community Coalition, Olympic Peninsula Kitsap Early Learning Coalition, United Way, the Clallam County Literacy Council, and other volunteer efforts.

• Tom Schaafsma: Nominated for his involvement with the Olympic Theatre Arts, Sunrise Rotary, Rotary Exchange, Special Needs Advocacy Parents, US Shelter Box Response Team, as well as other volunteer efforts.

A committee of previous Citizens of the Year chose the top three from a pool of Sequim citizens nominated by members of the community. The chamber will recognize the finalists and announce the two Community Service Awards and the Citizen of the Year at its luncheon at noon Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the Sunland Country Club. The buffet will cost $20, with coffee or tea only available for $3.

The event is open to all members of the community. Reservations must be made by Friday, Feb. 19; call 683-6197 or e-mail lynn@sequimchamber.com.
