Things will be looking up literally at Olympic Medical Center's Sequim campus in about seven weeks after new exterior signs are installed.
They'll be 9 feet tall.
"These are big letters," OMC Administrator Eric Lewis told hospital commissioners at their March 3 meeting.
"If you can't see these letters," he joked, "you probably shouldn't be driving."
The Fifth Avenue entrance to the campus also will be widened; see related report.
The new signs will do more than direct patients to and around the buildings that include the OMC Cancer Center, Medical Services Building and the under-construction Jamestown S'Klallam Family Health Clinic, Lewis said.
They also will "clearly brand the Olympic Medical Center Sequim Campus. Our current signage is not doing a very good job."
The 10 new signs will be lighted internally, he said, and cost $83,621. GSI Sign Systems of Minneapolis is the contractor.
Interior signs at both the Sequim campus and Olympic Memorial Hospital in Port Angeles also are due for upgrading.
In other action at their meeting, commissioners:
• Heard of plans to improve radiation simulation equipment at the cancer center.
Dr. Rena Zimmerman said the MRI machine makes images of a patient's body in order to pinpoint radiation treatment of tumors.
• Learned that OMC hopes to partner with Swedish Medical Center in a telestroke link that will allow the local emergency department to start immediate treatment of strokes with expert guidance from the Seattle hospital.
• Heard that OMC and Swedish also hope to collaborate in bringing two full-time neurologists to Sequim under a five-year contract.
"It's an exciting potential," said Dr. Scott Kennedy, chief medical officer.
"It's a badly needed resource in the community."
The neurologists would provide outpatient treatment locally, he said, with Swedish reaping referrals for third-level treatment in Seattle.
• Learned that OMC plans to hire an oncology osteopath and a radiation oncologist at the cancer center starting in August.
