June Robinson Memorial Park opened on Saturday, April 17, to a crowd of about 30 people.

The park lies on the south side of East Spruce Street between Sequim and Sunnyside avenues.

Robinson’s husband, Ray Robinson, cut the ribbon for the park’s grand opening.

“I’m pleased,” Ray Robinson said.

“I think she’d be more pleased for people to learn where their food comes from and how it’s made.”

The Sequim City Council named the park after Robinson, who was a founding member of the parks’ board, last August.

Robinson also was active with the Clallam County Historical Society, Sequim Museum and Arts Center, Clallam County Heritage Advisory Board, Clallam County Genealogical Society and Sequim school board.

She died May 13, 2009, at age 83.

About the park
The park runs in conjunction with Community Organic Gardens of Sequim.

It’s the first community garden owned by a city on the North Olympic Peninsula, said Jeff Edwards, Sequim parks coordinator.

The park’s garden hosts:

• Sixteen 10- by 10-foot ground plots
• Eight 4- by 10-foot raised beds

All spots are leased. 

City associate planner Joe Irvin said gardeners are young professionals to retirees and one woman has four Sequim children helping her.

Sequim city workers built the park with donations from Sequim Sunrise Rotary for the metal fence, woodshed and picnic table.

Boy Scout Sam Schwab built the raised beds for his Eagle Scout project.
Sequim’s parks department bought the gardening supplies.
