Fresh red and white paint should coat the exterior and trim of the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse before the end of the year, said Museum and Arts Center staff.

The MAC Nite dinner auction Saturday, April 24, raised more than $35,000, which will help pay for scraping, sanding, priming and painting the 118-year-old facility at 2781 Towne Road, Sequim.

Bids are being taken with a tentative start date late this summer.

MAC executive director Katherine Vollenweider said the schoolhouse was on the list of several preservation projects for the next 20 years.

“It’s a big undertaking,” she said.

“It’s not just painting but a lot of prep work needs to be done and it’s got to be applied right and last for awhile.”

Rodda Paint donated the paint for the project.

MAC staff is seeking additional donations and planning more fundraisers to fully fund the project.

All rental money for the facility goes to the schoolhouse’s restoration.
