At a 1 p.m. hearing today, Wednesday, May, 12, the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe will seek a shoreline substantial development permit to build a 30-foot by 40-foot deck on its property at 1272 Jamestown Road.

Annette Nesse, chief operations officer, said Monday the low-rise deck would provide beach access to its elders and physically challenged members and visitors during annual canoe landings.

The deck would be for tribal functions only as it is on private property.

Nesse said the hearing will have a public comment period. Chris Melly, hearing examiner, will consider the request and comments and is expected to rule by May 22.

In other tribal infrastructure news, Nesse reported the tribe completed on May 6 the installation of 0.2 of a mile of guard rail adjacent to its campus on U.S. Highway 101.

"The area has quite a drop-off, and a car landed within feet of Heron Hall, our meeting room," Nesse said.

"The guard rail is going to protect tribal property as well as the traveling public who use Highway 101 in that area."

The tribe applied for and received $92,172 in stimulus funding through the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act for the project.
