Selinda Barkhuis, a Port Angeles-based lawyer, announced her intent to run for county treasurer this week.

Barkhuis has been a senior planner with Clallam County Department of Community Development since 2006, working on a variety of long-range land use issues.

Before then, she held the position of grant facilitator/coordinator for the North Olympic Peninsula Lead Entity, a group working to restore priority salmon habitat on the peninsula.

Among her goals as treasurer are to “restore confidence in the Treasurer’s Office” and “review every aspect of what’s going on in the Treasurer’s office and make any necessary changes,” according to her Web site, www.barkhuis.com.

In February, a state investigator found that more than $600,000 in public funds were stolen from the Clallam County Treasurer’s Office, allegedly by former office cashier Catherine Betts.

The past 30 years, Barkhuis has worked as an H&R Block tax preparer, law office manager, attorney, mediator, real estate agent, Web master and grant facilitator before her position with the county, according to her Web site.

Barkhuis practiced law in Clallam County from 1995-2003, specializing in family law, dependency law and criminal defense. She received a Clallam County Pro Bono Distinguished Service Award in 1996.

In 1998, she authored and published the Family Law Bluffer’s Manual, to be used by Clallam County lawyers representing pro-bono family law clients, and in 2001, she served as president of the Clallam County Bar Association.

She serves as co-producer for the annual “Clallam Legal,” a fundraiser for Pro Bono that offers local attorneys the opportunity to earn continuing legal education credits.

Barkhuis worked part time as a real estate agent from 2000-2003 while producing the www.PAtoday.com Web site, which won a Tourism Promotion Certificate of Excellence from the North Olympic Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau.

Barkhuis was born and raised in the Netherlands, immigrated to the U.S. in 1981 and became a U.S. citizen in 1989. She moved to Clallam County in 1995.

She has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, summa cum laude, from Grand Canyon University in Arizona; a master’s degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Washington and a Juris Doctor (professional law) degree, also from the University of Washington.
