The torch flame for the Special Olympics Washington remained steady for Clallam County law enforcement on June 2.

Several officials including Sequim Police and Clallam County Sheriffs shared torch-carrying duties for 63 miles across the peninsula for the 37th Special Olympics Washington Summer Games at McChord Air Force Base.

Torch carriers brought it from Laird’s Corner to the Hood Canal where the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe canoed the torch across to Salisbury Park in Kitsap County.

In Sequim, Clallam County Sgt. Sheriff Monty Martin and his wife Maureen brought the torch across the bridge across the Dungeness River Railroad Bridge to Sequim Police Officer Maris Turner.

She brought it to officer Mike Hill of the K-9 unit who ran with Chase the dog and fellow officers Rick Larsen and John Southard.

Other participating law enforcement were Jefferson County Sheriff’s Offices, Port Angeles and Port Townsend Police Departments, Washington State Patrol, National Park Service, U.S. Border Patrol, Clallam Bay Corrections Center and the U.S. Coast Guard.

The torch arrived on June 4 for the opening games.

More than 2,500 athletes from Sequim and around the state are participating in events like track and field, power lifting, soccer, cycling and swimming.
