The flies were buzzing at the Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers’ annual outing May 22 at Pooh’s Ponds near Joyce.

More than 60 people attended, including 20 wounded soldiers and veterans with Project Healing Waters.

Dean Childs, vice-president of the Fly Fishers, said attendance was nearly doubled from last year.

Fly fishers gave casting and fly-tying lessons to the soldiers, along with individual coaching for beginners and plenty of food.

The club also is building a wooden boat to give to the wounded veterans group later this summer as a fundraiser.

Jim Chestnut a representative of Trout Unlimited, presented Project Healing Waters with $1,000 for their service.

Others in attendance were Chuck Tye, Project Healing Waters regional coordinator; members of Greywolf and Port Ludlow fly fishing clubs, Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers and Carlsborg Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The Olympic Peninsula Fly Fishers has 65 members from Sequim and Port Angeles.

They meet at 7 p.m. the first Monday each month in the Loomis log cabin in Lincoln Park in Port Angeles. Visit www.opff.org for more on the club and www.projecthealingwaters.org on Project Healing Waters.
