Democrats vote on endorsements

The Clallam County Democratic Central Committee endorsed four candidates on Saturday, June 5, for the upcoming election.

The committee endorsed Mike Doherty for Clallam County District 3 commissioner, John H. Miller for Clallam County Community Development director, and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, committee chairman John Merton Marrs said in a news release.

The endorsements were made at the committee’s quarterly meeting at the Port Angeles Library Carver Room. Doherty, Miller and Murray received unanimous votes to receive letters of endorsement, Marrs said.

The vote for an endorsement of Dicks was met with one dissenting vote by Anna Barrigan, Marrs said.

Doherty, a longtime Port Angeles Democrat, announced last week that he would run for re-election. No one has declared a candidacy to challenge his re-election, Marrs said.

Though Miller is running for a nonpartisan office, the committee decided to formalize their support for him anyway, he said.

“It shows support for him in what could be a difficult race,” Marrs said.

Miller, a former chair-man of the county Democrats and a current member of the central committee’s executive board, made a presentation to the committee at the meeting. Alan Barnard and Roark Miller have announced their intent to run against him.

The Murray and Dicks endorsements follow endorsements in May by the Democratic Party’s precinct committee officers of Clallam, Jefferson and part of Grays Harbor counties in the 24th Legislative District, Marrs said.
