Former Sequim Police Chief Robert Spinks responded to inquiries about a possible run for city council Monday with a press release.
In it Spinks said he has nothing to announce as far as a run for city council, but intends on remaining an active citizen in Sequim.
"It is interesting how over the course of the last few weeks how many people have asked me to run for council, told me to consider running for council or have offered support if I do run for council," he said. "In general, the comments from far and wide have been very supportive."
Spinks said he has a vested interest in quality government and services in Sequim. After he took the job as police chief in Sequim, he talked his in-laws and his wife's 100-year-old grandmother into moving to Sequim, he said.
"So I have every reason to want to stay in Sequim. My wife and I genuinely love the community and the people in Sequim have just been outstanding in their support and kindness to us."
In the news release, Spinks was critical of City Manager Steve Burkett, pointing out that seven employees have left the city staff since Burkett was hired in October 2009.
"That represents 10 percent of the city's workforce -- in almost every case a higher paid replacement has come or is being recruited to replace tenured city employees," he said. "A new marketing director also has been created for $60,000 in additional expense, not to mention the various severance, time off payouts, recruiting and other costs that such a high turnover in staff costs any organization."
