Terry Ryan, president of Legacy Canine Behavior and Training, Inc., has been appointed to the American Humane Association's Animal Behavior and Training Advisory Committee.

Ryan has worked in the field of canine behavior and training for more than 40 years. She was one of six chairmen who wrote the national standards for humane dog training funded by the American Humane Association in 2002. She also played a principal role in creating and teaching a national dog training program for the PetsMart chain of pet shops.

Ryan became an AKC Obedience Trial judge in 1984 and currently is on emeritus status.

She established a national certification program for dog trainers in Japan. Ryan helped create and still conducts a Japanese Canine Good Citizen testing and passport program that allows entry of qualified dogs into participating national hotels and restaurants.

In the U.S., Ryan was a founding member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers in 1993. Today it is the largest association of dog trainers in the world.

As a Karen Pryor Academy faculty member, Ryan is the Academy's only international program instructor. When not overseas, Ryan often is conducting specialty workshops at Legacy in Sequim, teaching students the science of animal learning with practical application using chickens as the training model.
